Building a Pathway for Pickleball’s Next Generation

SPORTS TALENT LINK is a youth pickleball scouting, development and athlete representation organization based in Northeast Florida, serving the Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra and St. Augustine communities. Founder Jessica Bentley draws on a background in athletics and decades as one of Miami’s most successful model and talent agents to lead STL’s on-court development and off-court life-skills programming.
Walk onto a school gymnasium court in Northeast Florida on a weekday afternoon, and you might see something that looks less like a club activity and more like a talent pipeline in motion.
Kids as young as eight are learning to read a dink, yes, but they are also learning how to introduce themselves to a coach, how to lose a rally without losing composure, and how to talk about their own progress the way an athlete talks about a season. That is the idea behind Sports Talent Link, and it is why we are honored to share our story with The Pickleball Weekly community.
Before founding STL, I spent decades building my career in athletics and, later, as one of the most successful model agents in Miami, teaching models and actors how to sell themselves, build a personal brand, and market themselves in one of the most competitive industries there is. In that world, talent alone never guarantees success. The ones who built lasting careers were the ones who also learned how to walk into a room with confidence, communicate clearly with the people evaluating them, handle rejection without letting it shake their identity, and present a brand that made them memorable in a sea of equally talented competitors.
Those are the exact same skills I now apply at STL, just translated onto a pickleball court instead of a casting room. A young athlete who can maintain composure after a lost point, introduce themselves to a coach or scout with genuine confidence, and understand how to present their own story and brand is an athlete who is prepared for whatever comes next, whether that is a competitive pickleball career, a college recruiting conversation or any professional field down the road. I am teaching skills that are not taught in schools. I am teaching them the same fundamentals I taught adults for decades, just starting the lesson a lot earlier.

Scouting the Sport’s Youngest Believers
Sports Talent Link, or STL, started with a simple observation: pickleball’s youth movement was growing faster than the infrastructure built to support it. Plenty of programs could teach a kid to hit a third-shot drop. Far fewer were built to identify promising young athletes early, develop them intentionally over multiple seasons, and help their families understand what a real pathway in the sport could look like, from local school clubs all the way to competitive and representation opportunities down the road.
A Gap STL to Fill
Based in Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, and in the St. Augustine area, we work directly with schools to bring pickleball programming onto campus, run structured clinics, leagues, and support the families navigating the sport for the first time. Our recent partnership with a private academy is a good example of the appetite that is out there. The fall session sold out in a single day.
Life Skills First, Scorecard Second
What sets STL apart is not just the on-court coaching. We built our programming around the belief that a pickleball court is one of the best classrooms available for life skills that have nothing to do with a paddle: mindset, communication, personal branding, and resilience. That philosophy shows up most fully in STL Families, our year-long online membership community that pairs pickleball development with lessons in mindset, media literacy, and personal growth for both kids and their parents.
We did not build that program alone. A small roster of contributors, each an expert in a different corner of youth development, shares the teaching load every month, which keeps the content varied and keeps young athletes hearing from more than one voice about what it means to compete and grow.
Why Schools Are Saying Yes
The response from schools has told us something important about where families’ priorities sit right now. Administrators are not just looking for another after-school activity to fill a time slot. They are looking for a sport that is genuinely accessible, that welcomes beginners without intimidating them, and that gives kids a reason to build confidence in a low-pressure setting before they ever step onto a competitive bracket. Pickleball checks every one of those boxes, and that is a big part of why our school partnership pipeline keeps growing across Northeast Florida.
What Comes Next
Our focus for the year ahead is building out the infrastructure to match the demand we are already seeing: a clearer tiered partnership structure for schools, facilities and sponsors; a stronger operational system so no family or coach falls through the cracks as we scale; and continued growth of STL Families as a home base for kids and parents who want more than a weekly clinic.
Pickleball gave millions of adults a second act. We believe it can give thousands of kids a first one: a place where they discover what discipline, sportsmanship, and self-belief feel like, long before anyone asks about their DUPR rating. That is the story Sports Talent Link is here to tell, one school gym at a time. ●
