Spain! Europe’s Next Pickleball Powerhouse
By The Pickleball Weekly Editorial Team • Nov 5, 2025 • 7 min read
Beneath the Spanish sun, where the rhythm of life moves between long lunches and late-evening laughter, a new sound has joined the national soundtrack. The pop-pop of pickleball paddles. From the seaside resorts of the Costa del Sol to inland villages surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, Spain has quietly become Europe’s undisputed pickleball powerhouse.
According to the Spanish Pickleball Federation, Spain now leads the continent with over 36,000 registered members and more than 250 active clubs, outpacing even the United Kingdom, France, and Germany in organized participation. What began as a niche pastime among expats and tennis converts has evolved into a nationwide movement, one that’s reshaping community life, fitness culture, and recreation across the Iberian Peninsula.
A Federation Built for Growth
Spain’s pickleball story officially began in 2012, when the Spanish Pickleball Association (Asociación Española de Pickleball) was founded to promote and organize the sport. In 2023, the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) formally recognized pickleball under its structure—a milestone that gave the sport institutional legitimacy and access to resources once reserved for tennis and padel.
That recognition also led to the creation of a National Pickleball Committee, tasked with developing tournaments, coaching certifications, and facility standards. It marked a turning point: pickleball was no longer an outsider sport. It was part of Spain’s athletic DNA.
“Spain’s combination of climate, facilities, and passion for racket sports made this evolution inevitable,” noted the RFET in its official statement. “Pickleball embodies accessibility. Anyone can play, anywhere.”
The Hotspot: Costa del Sol
Nowhere is the boom more visible than along the Costa del Sol, the sun-soaked region stretching through Málaga, Marbella, Fuengirola, and Estepona. What began with a handful of converted tennis courts has grown into a network of world-class facilities.
Pickleball Mijas now serves as one of the region’s best- known community hubs, with regular clinics, social play, and tournaments that attract visitors from around Europe.
Club Deportivo Pickleball Málaga and Estepona Tennis & Padel Club have added professional-grade courts, lighting, and structured play programs.
Andalusian resorts and new housing developments are building private courts as must-have amenities, placing pickleball alongside golf and padel as a defining feature of Mediterranean leisure living.
The region’s year-round sunshine has made it a magnet for traveling players, coaches, and retirees from northern Europe. For many, Spain has become the continent’s version of Florida, a warm-weather haven where the pickleball season never ends.
The Spanish Advantage
Spain’s dominance isn’t an accident. It’s the result of cultural alignment and smart infrastructure. The country’s love affair with padel, another court-based sport played with solid paddles, provided a ready audience familiar with the quick reflexes, soft hands, and social atmosphere that pickleball demands.
Add to that a deep pool of existing multi-sport clubs, experienced coaches, and tourism infrastructure, and Spain became the ideal incubator for pickleball’s European rise.
The Spanish Pickleball Federation has also prioritized grassroots initiatives, working with municipalities to bring the sport to schools, community centers, and recreational complexes. As a result, the average age of players is dropping, and mixed-generation games are now a common sight across the country.
Beyond the Coast
While Andalusia and the Balearic Islands dominate headlines, pickleball is now spreading inland to Madrid, Valencia, Zaragoza, and smaller towns like Secastilla, shown in our cover photo. Nestled amid the rolling hills of Aragón, its setting is a reminder that pickleball’s Spanish story is as much about people as places, about how a global sport can take root even in the most traditional landscapes.
This rural expansion reflects a new phase of the sport’s growth: pickleball not just as a coastal attraction, but as a unifying pastime across communities of every size. In fact, many local councils are now exploring multi-use courts in parks and town squares to meet growing demand.
A Continental Influence
Spain’s rise is shaping pickleball’s broader European trajectory. The country is an active member of the European Pickleball Federation (EPF) and plays a leading role in continental events such as the Spanish Pickleball Open and the European Championships. The federation’s expertise in training and facility development is being shared with neighboring countries through partnerships and coaching exchanges.
International tournaments in Málaga and Madrid have already drawn players from the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Germany, positioning Spain as the de facto hub of European pickleball.
Beyond the Baseline: Spain’s Pickleball Future
Spain’s story doesn’t end with growth charts or new courts. It’s evolving into something deeper. Across the country, pickleball is changing how communities gather and how generations connect. What began as a sport for expats and enthusiasts has become part of Spain’s social fabric, joining football, tennis, and padel as pillars of daily recreation.
For developers, pickleball has become a lifestyle investment—boosting tourism, wellness, and property value. For families, it’s a sport that everyone can share. And for Spain itself, it’s a new way to showcase what the country has always done best: bring people together through passion, sunshine, and play.
From bustling Marbella resorts to quiet mountain towns like Secastilla, pickleball in Spain reflects more than sport. It’s community in motion, with a rhythm that feels unmistakably Spanish.
